Sample Documentation for General Notes Software

Typical of Pro/ENGINEER® v18

Standard sets of notes can be selected for inclusion into the Pro/E model. The GenNotes software provides access to a dynamic, constantly evolving database of general notes.

The modeler can select a category of machine and then a type of note from menu selections displayed by GenNotes. Model parameters will then be created and initialized according to the selected type of note.

The parameters are used to scan the master notes database and create notes on the basis of the parameter list in the model. Select the GenNotes program from the MISC->AUX APP MGMT menu as shown below.

When properly started the highlighted menu selection (Make Gen Note) shown below will be visible in part or assembly mode.

To create a set of general notes in your model, select the 'Make Gen Note' menu selection shown above. You will then see the following menu set:

The three options shown are:

Note List - Display the note selection set of sub-menus
Make Notes - Scan model parameters. Cross check against notes database for matching and create note depending upon parameters.
Clear All - Clear all note generation parameters from the model.
When 'Note List' is selected you will see another menu set. The menu shows categories of notes. Since the note database is changing continuously, this display will not necessarily be the same. At the time of this writing, the menu displayed as shown below…

In this case, you can select from 'MATERIALS', 'REFLECTOR', or 'STRUCTURE' as the category from which to select the type of note. Below, the selection shown comes from having select 'MATERIALS' from the category menu.

You now see another set of options. These are the note types. When a type is selected, parameters are created in your model. If the parameters are already in the model, their contents will be changed to match what is defined by the note type.

If you select JPL STD a set of parameters will be created.

If you then select 718 FORGE, parameters will be created which differ from what was created in JPL STD. This gives you a cumulative parameter creation capability which transfers to note creation.

It is, incidentally, this feature which gave rise to the 'Clear All' menu option. Below is a list of parameters created in the model when JPL STD was selected.

Now, with the parameters created for use with the general note creation option, select the 'Make Notes' option from the GNOTE menu. The system will display the following set of notes with parameters shown in place of their values.

The presence of this info window display indicates that the GenNotes software successfully created a file entitled GNoteDat.TXT in your current working directory. The file will be used as text source to the drawing you will use to convey model contents.

This note is also created in the model as a note parameter. In the event that you lose the original text file or need access to the note text from outside a drawing, it is stored in the model as well.

This text will be used in the drawing to create a general note. From drawing mode, select the menus required to create a note from file. The menu display for creating a note in this way will be as shown below.

Select 'Make Note' from the NOTE TYPES menu and then select a point to place the note on the face of the drawing.

Pro/ENGINEER will then display a list of files with the .TXT extension. In this case, you see the GnoteDat.TXT highlighted as shown below

Select the GNoteDat.TXT option for you text file data source.

The drawing will then have a note displayed at the location you selected as shown below.

Note that the parameter contents have been used in the note to display the actual content of the parameter. You can change the contents of the parameter either from the GenNotes software as is recommended or you can change it using Pro/ENGINEER drawing or model modes.
